Badminton News: Carder and Findlay through to main draw in Poland

Scotland’s Matthew Carder has battled his way through to the main draw of the men’s singles at the Polish International in Lubin.

The seventh qualifying seed started with a bye yesterday then won a tight contest against Kyryll Nesterenko 21-15 23-21, saving two game points in the second game before winning on his first match point. Then he toppled Poland’s Krzysztop Jakowczuk 21-13 21-14.

Those two wins earned the South Queensferry player a first-round clash with Hsu Jui Ting of Taiwan today.

Rebekka Findlay also booked her place in the main draw of the women’s singles.

She defeated Ewa Piotrowska of Poland 21-13 22-20 on her second match point in her opening contest then won a thrilling tussle 24-22 21-18 against England’s Kerri Scott, who is the daughter of former Scotland international Kevin Scott. Findlay led 20-18 in the first game but need five game points to take it, In the second game she trailed 18-15 before a six-point flourish clinched victory.

Findlay will also contest the women’s doubles first round with Caitlin Pringle, who partners Patrick MacHugh in the mixed where they are fourth seeds.

MacHugh and Martin Campbell are Scotland’s big hopes with the pair seeded third in the men’s doubles.

Badminton News: Yonex Open Japan 2013(Day 6) Newsflash - No Mixed Doubles Final

Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei of China have won the Yonex Open Japan 2013 Mixed Doubles final by walkover.

This is due to the fact that their compatriot, Xu Chen, is suffering from a high fever and therefore he and his partner, Ma Jin, will not contest today's showdown which was slated to be the first final played.

Ma Jin still has a shot at a title in Japan, playing in the Women's Doubles final with Tang Jinhua. Their opponents are Danish duo, Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Christinna Pedersen.
